How Do I Choose a Guardian for My Kids?
In the unlikely event that both parents should pass away, someone must take charge of the kids, and you do not want the courts to be in charge of that choice. So you must have a will drafted naming a guardian and, preferably, an alternate guardian too. Naming a guardian for ones children can be a difficult and emotionally charged choice, but it helps to approach it as a business decision. It helps to list all the people your thinking of and running through a brief checklist. The following are some issues to consider:
1. Are they healthy?
Are they young enough to take on the responsibility and be there for your children until they have left home?
2. Do they have the money?
If you may not leave enough money for their support through college, this may be a big consideration.
3. Do they have the time?
What is their lifestyle like and what are their other responsibilities?
4. Are they geographically desirable?
After your children have been through the trauma of losing parents, uprooting them should be avoided if possible.
5. Do they share your views, religion?
6. Should you name one person or both persons in a couple?
It is better to name the person you really want only in case of any change in their marital status in the future.
